Fake Tabua in Fiji
May,2017
From the FIJI TIMES ONLINE : A investigation has been launched by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs on the circulation and sale of fake tabua (whale's tooth) in the country. Being aware of this issue, which it said had been going on for some time, it took a serious twist when one of the fake whale's tooth was presented to the Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama, in one of his official engagements in Tailevu recently. iTaukei Affairs permanent secretary Savenaca Kaunisela said they confiscated more than 40 fake tabua last week. In an exclusive interview with The Fiji Times yesterday, he said the 40 tabua were confiscated from different places, with majority found in villages. "This is not the first time we had come across this issue. It has been going on for quite some time now until it was brought to our attention after we visited one of the villages in Tailevu last week," Mr Kaunisela said. "Fijian communities and villages are the very places where these fake tabua are found and the sad part is the villages are not even aware of this." He said they would conduct an investigation and find out the origin of the fake whale's tooth. -

Kiribati Armour at Cambridge
March,2017
The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is proud to present the focused results of an interdisciplinary collaboration.
This new collaboration between the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and Tungaru: the Kiribati Project, focuses on the extraordinary suits of armour made in the small islands of Kiribati throughout the 19th century.
By looking closely at the armour we will discover how these complex objects were made, worn and used. Other objects on display will explore the contemporary relevance of this armour to I-Kiribati people today. The display will also include a new suit of armour made especially for the Museum by artists Kaetaeta Watson, Lizzy Leckie and Chris Charteris.
Exhibition curated by Alison Clark and Rachel Howie.
The research leading to this exhibition has received funding from the European Research Council project Pacific Presences [http://pacificpresences.maa.cam.ac.uk] under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme, grant agreement no.324146]11.
