OBAMBA RELIQUARY FIGURE
Gabon, region of Upper Ogooué, Kota people, 1st third of the 20th century. Thick wood core plated with embossed copper and brass sheets and strips. Height: 54 cm (+ base). Provenance: A private collection, Lyon, by descent.

The concave, almond-shaped face is divided into four quarters. On the two brass strips crossing in the middle of the face are affixed half-moon eyes and a triangular nose. The lateral segments terminate curled with "duck tails". The neck and upper parts of the diamond shaped body are decorated with copper sheets embossed with chevrons and linear motifs. The crescent is classic, adorned in its middle with a geometric pattern. On the rear, a long oval is carved in high relief. The base of the wooden diamond is patinated.
Devotion to the relics of the dead is one of the characteristics of many religions in Gabon. The ancestors are made even more present when their bones are carefully preserved, subject to specific rites. The use of the bone-box was widespread in Congo and Gabon, especially among the so-called Kota peoples. They are the only ones in this region to use a metal decoration covering almost all of the wooden frame. These kinds of portable tombs were exhibited on many occasions : at the initiation of the young men the families of the clan gathered together and brought out their reliquaries. In other circumstances, the worship offered by the clan leader was to promote the fertility of women and the land, or enhance hunting and fishing, or contribute to therapeutic care.

RELIQUARY FIGURE - Very close in style to the shamayé Kota, this reliquary figure is similar to those of the traditional artistic center in the village of Otala, whose main artist was the chief Okwéré. ANTIKE IN BASEL is celebrating its 10th edition. Internationally renowned specialists will showcase fine works of art from the Great Civilizations of the Mediterranean - as well as prehistoric artefacts, Tribal Art, artworks from Oceania and Asia. This year, we are welcoming a laboratory specialized in TL analysis and a goldsmith crafting unique jewelry from antique objects. The broad range of exhibits offers a fascinating glimpse into art historical developments and leads to a better understanding of the origins of Modern Art.

Des spécialistes de renommée internationale proposent une sélection d'oeuvres issues des grandes civilisations de la Méditerranée - et des artéfacts préhistoriques, des Arts premiers, des objets d'Océanie et d'Asie. Nous accueillons un laboratoire spécialisé en analyse TL et un orfèvre qui, à partir d'objets antiques, crée des bijoux uniques. Le large éventail des oeuvres présentées donne un bel aperçu du développement de l'histoire de l'art et permet une meilleure compréhension des racines de l'art moderne.

The second edition of The Rooms, art fair will be held at Mix Hotel over 4 days.

From 4 to 7 June 2026, eager to offer a playful alternative to traditional art fairs, drawing inspiration from similar, successfully tested experiences in New York (Gramercy), Los Angeles (Hotel Hollywood Roosevelt), and Bangkok (Hotel Art Fair), The Rooms will take over several dozen rooms at The Mix Brussels, a four-star hotel and club inaugurated in spring 2023 in the former headquarters of La Royale Belge in Watermael-Boitsfort. In total, no fewer than around forty contemporary art galleries and dealers in art and antiques, both Belgian and international, will occupy the spaces, filling two floors on two wings of the building. The aim is to preserve as much as possible the warm and original character of Lionel Jadot's rooms they will inhabit, in order to offer a more intimate new way of encountering the artworks on display. The event, which is open to all audiences, will also include an exhibition of monumental sculptures and a series of talks in collaboration with our partner Puilaetco bank.

La deuxième édition de The Rooms, foire d’art se tiendra à l’hôtel Mix sur 4 jours.

Du 4 au 7 juin 2026, désireux d’offrir une alternative ludique aux foires d’art traditionnelles, en s’inspirant d’expériences similaires testées avec succès à New York (Gramercy), Los Angeles (Hotel Hollywood Roosevelt) et Bangkok (Hotel Art Fair), The Rooms accueillera plusieurs dizaines de chambres au Mix Brussels, un hôtel-club quatre étoiles inauguré au printemps 2023 dans l’ancien siège de La Royale Belge à Watermael-Boitsfort. Au total, ce ne sont pas moins d’une quarantaine de galeries d’art contemporain et de marchands d’art et d’antiquités, tant belges qu’internationaux, qui occuperont les espaces, remplissant deux étages sur deux ailes du bâtiment. L’objectif est de préserver autant que possible le caractère chaleureux et original des chambres de Lionel Jadot qu’ils habiteront, afin d’offrir une nouvelle façon plus intime de découvrir les œuvres d’art exposées. L’événement, ouvert à tous les publics, comprendra également une exposition de sculptures monumentales et une série de conférences en collaboration avec notre partenaire Puilaetco bank.
