Our collaborator Tian Gan presents the Galerie Meyer double exhibition of Oceanic and Eskimo works of art which have the particularity of being adorned with signs, glyphs and graphics in confrontation with the strange and singular drawings of the artist Serge Dubuc. From the lime spatula of the Massim region, whose figure is adorned with spirals and zigzags to the Aboriginal Churinga covered with tiny streaks, to the Ewa sculpture from the Korewori River, this exhibition brings together and synergizes the signs and letters that make up our different daily, functional and ritual languages. From text to speech, the visual is heard !

Anthony JP Meyer presents five delicate Ivory Eskimo objects : 1. A powerfully carved, female (?), seated figure with typical Eskimo features. Maritime Chukchi, called Anqallyt ("the sea people") in the Chukchi language, Eastern coastal Siberia. Mineralized walrus tusk. 200 BC – 300 AD ?. 7 cm. 2. A superb drag handle or toggle carved as swimming seal. Alaska. Walrus tusk (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) with a superb patina of age and usage, glass trade beads, skin and whiskers. 9,7 cm. 18th/19th century. 3. A remarkably sensitive and naturalistic human head carved as a pendant or ornament. Mid to late Thule culture, Greenland or Eastern Canada (Newfoundland), circa pre-1500 AD. Mineralized walrus tusk (odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) with a fine crackled patina. There are extensive traces of earth and possibly organic material in the orbits and nostrils and the inside of the mouth. The surface has been professionally stabilized. 3,4 cm. 4. Shaman's amulet or iinruq (iinrut), representing a half figure with extensive tattoos on both the front and rear of the torso. The smiling face is tattooed at the edges of the eyes and the mouth is decorated with an inset, blue, glass labret. Yup'ik (Eskimo), possibly Cape Vancouver, Alaska, USA. Walrus tusk and glass bead. 7,3 cm. 18th/19th century. 5. A fine needle case in the for of a slit tube decorated at one end with a fiercely carved head of a snarling wolf. Anthony JP Meyer presents a very fine danse mask representing an ancestral spirit, or yamburai brag. This type of mask was used in most ceremonial occasions and is related to initiation, hunting and warfare, and harvest rituels notably one called Samak having to do with the planting of yams. During hunting it is believed that the yamburai brag spirit reveals the game to the hunter while concealing the quarry from strangers. Turubu Village, North-Coast, Papua New-Guinea, Melanesia. Anthony JP Meyer presents the 7 rediscovered drawings by Herman SOMUK a Solomon Island artist from the 1930's. These drawings were originally collected in 1934/1935 by Rev. Father Patrick O'Reilly, a renowned ethnologist and missionary while on a study mission to Bougainville and Buka Islands in the Northern Solomons in the Western Pacific Ocean. Father O’Reilly gave SOMUK pens, crayons and paper so that he could illustrate the myths and legends of his culture. These drawings were subsequently exhibited in Paris at the Marist Mission headquarters in 1951 and Jean Dubuffet acquired three of them for his collection. The 7 drawings presented here were given as gifts by Father O’Reilly to his close friend the architect René Dessirie. These drawings are for the moment the only known examples outside of museums and institutions. Ces dessins ont ensuite été exposés à Paris au siège de la Mission mariste en 1951 et Jean Dubuffet en a acquis trois pour sa collection. Les 7 dessins présentés ici ont été offerts par le Père O’Reilly à son ami proche l’architecte René Dessirie. Ces dessins sont pour le moment les seuls exemples connus en dehors des musées et institutions.

Anthony JP Meyer presents an early, very fine, and expressive mask representing an ancestral spirit, or a shaman. The realistic features are relatively unusual in the corpus of Northern Eskimo masks as most of the later types are quite highly stylized. Inupiak (Inupiaq) language group, Point Hope, Northern Alaska. Weathered Alaskan Yellow Cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis) and marine ivory with a thick granular paint-like substance and salt and sand deposits. 18,5 x 12,5 x 5,8 cm. 18th/19th century or earlier. Anthony JP Meyer presentes an extremely fine and early War-Shield, or epok. These shields are representations of important ancestors. The face on this example is carved with more prominent features then most and shows large pig tusks jutting from the nose to encircle the protruding mouth. The incised decoration on this example is unusual and very finely done. The central vertical band is carved with 5 stylized human figures in the splayed hocker position. The concentric scroll patterns one either side of the central ridge are very well balanced and rhythmic. A large quadruped or stylized human figure is carved on the forehead again in the splayed hocker position. The outer edges of the shield are carved with dentate motifs and the right side of the shield is pierced along its length to support the imposing fiber fringe that would normally be attached. The rear is scooped out with two vertical pierced ridges and one cross bar remaining for the handle. Karau Village, Lower Sepik River coastal area, New Guinea, Melanesia. Wood and cane with a fine deep red ochre pigment and lime highlighting (no know restorations or repairs). Stone carved. 160 x 22 x 17 cm. 19th century. Provenance : Probably collected in the field by Dr. Richard Neuhauss between 1908 and 1910; Joe Hloucha, Prague; Náprstek Ethnographic Museum, Prague; Will Hoogstraate, Amsterdam; possibly Konietzko, Hamburg; E. Anthony JP Meyer presents a Yimar figure in this video. Yimam (or Yimar) People, Upper regions of the Korewori and Blackwater Rivers, Southern Middle Sepik, P.N.G., New Guinea, Melanesia. Hard, dense, erroded and weathered wood (vitex cofassus ?). 28,8 cm x 9,2 cm x 11 cm. A Carbon 14 test gives a conventional age of minus 180 years (pre 1950) +/- 25 years (1745 to 1795 AD). The calibrated C 14 age verified by dendrochronology gives an earliest date of 1650 AD for the death of the tree from which this figure is carved and an average latest date of 1820 AD. The ethnological information concerning the rituals and methods of wood-carving in New Guinea shows that the wood is usually carved fresh. Anthony JP Meyer presents a superb and large bokolo or chiefly wealth item ornamented with four figures: the two external figures are avian, and the two central ones are anthropomorphic. The bokolo, which are a distinct form of barava, are sacred items associated with the chief; they were often attached to the rafters and walls of the chiefly burial houses. The realistic features are relatively unusual in the corpus of Northern Eskimo masks as most of the later types are quite highly stylized. In this video AnthonyJP Meyer is talking about a very fine warriors collar from Solomon Island, Melanesia - 19th century. Composed of a woven fiber band with approximately 440 porpoise teeth inserted into the weave. Each tooth has been carefully selected so that they are of the same size and curvature; as well as pierced laterally at the root for the inclusion in the woven band.
