Sawos Soup Dish

A fine and large kamana, or soup bowl used by initiated men. The decor is composed of four stylized human faces – probably male - representing important spiritual ancestors. The figures are separated by geometric motifs. Koiwat Village style, Sawos People, Middle Sepik, P.N.G., New Guinea, Melanesia. Fired and polychromed clay.. 26 cm in diameter. 20th century.
