Fake Tabua in Fiji

May 20, 2017

From the FIJI TIMES ONLINE : A investigation has been launched by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs on the circulation and sale of fake tabua (whale's tooth) in the country. Being aware of this issue, which it said had been going on for some time, it took a serious twist when one of the fake whale's tooth was presented to the Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama, in one of his official engagements in Tailevu recently. iTaukei Affairs permanent secretary Savenaca Kaunisela said they confiscated more than 40 fake tabua last week. In an exclusive interview with The Fiji Times yesterday, he said the 40 tabua were confiscated from different places, with majority found in villages. "This is not the first time we had come across this issue. It has been going on for quite some time now until it was brought to our attention after we visited one of the villages in Tailevu last week," Mr Kaunisela said. "Fijian communities and villages are the very places where these fake tabua are found and the sad part is the villages are not even aware of this." He said they would conduct an investigation and find out the origin of the fake whale's tooth.
